José Luis Mendilibar landed in the daily routine of Olympiacos halfway through last season and took over the fate of a ship that had set course for the rocks. However, within a few months he managed to lead the Piraeus team to the conquest of the UEFA Europa Conference League and automatically acquired a lasting connection with the fans of the "red and whites". Mendilibar was unknown to many when he was announced as the new coach of Olympiacos last February. He was born on March 14, 1961 in the Basque Country and played without great achievements from 1979 to 1994 in Bilbao, Logroñés, Sestão and Lemona.
His coaching career began immediately after and this year marks 20 years on the bench. It has been a journey full of experiences, but also moments of success, such as his emergence as the top coach in La Liga in the 2016-2017 season, as well as winning two European trophies back 2 back with Sevilla in 2023 (Europa League) and Olympiacos in 2024 (Conference League).

He is a man who is intense on the bench, calm and simple in everyday life. He is characterized by self-confidence and faith in his choices. He is an old-fashioned coach and of course distances himself from the function of football from statistics, while he has no relationship with social media. His appearance last winter in Karaiskakis gave rise to a special persona. Mendilibar, although the temperature in mid-February was close to "zero", preferred a polo shirt, surprising many.
